International Collaboration in Neonatal Care: Lessons Learned Through Multicenter Video Review

Video recording of medical procedures offers invaluable opportunities for reflection and improvement. In the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), video review has proven particularly beneficial. While both the Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC) and the Medical University of Vienna (MUV) have successfully integrated video review into their NICU practices, international collaboration could unlock further insights.

This study details our pioneering work in conducting multicenter video review sessions between the LUMC and MUV. We analyzed recordings of five essential neonatal procedures, identifying 19 relevant differences in practices. These collaborative sessions fostered knowledge exchange, with 7 of the identified differences prompting us to adapt local practices or policies.

Key Findings

  • Enhanced perspectives: Multicenter video review provided a unique and objective lens for analyzing procedural variations, prompting critical reflection and potential improvements to both centers' practices.

  • Sharing new techniques: Discussions highlighted emerging techniques, like Point Of Care Ultrasonography (POCUS), facilitating shared learning and faster adoption of beneficial practices.

  • Refining implementation strategies: By reviewing the implementation of Physiological Based Cord Clamping (PBCC), we identified strategies to streamline its use and address common challenges.

Significance

This study highlights the immense potential of multicenter video review for:

  • Elevating neonatal care: Sharing insights gleaned from real-world procedures has the power to enhance patient outcomes across international boundaries.

  • Bridging knowledge gaps: Our approach could facilitate collaboration between centers of varying resources levels, particularly in low-resource settings.

  • Advancing medical practice: This platform encourages data-driven improvements to guidelines, offering a pathway for more effective and standardized neonatal care.

Our work demonstrates the transformative potential of multicenter video review in the NICU setting. We envision this approach driving global collaboration, leading to advancements in quality improvement initiatives and a higher standard of care for newborns worldwide.
